Why We Love Small Churches
Before being elected as the first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan I had served primarily in large congregations with memberships varying from 250 to 1200. I was elected to this new and emerging diocese because of my interest in grassroots mutual ministry team development - which I had begun to do for the Diocese of Minnesota as the chair of its Commission on Ministry. Eastern Michigan is a diocese of mostly small churches which vary in average Sunday attendance from 15 to 200. During my eleven years there I fell in love with the small church. There is something real and genuine about the communal realities in a small church. I discovered that small churches (despite the common misconception to the contrary) are the most capable of healthy change and growth. I have stories to prove it. Check out my page Small is Great tab on this site, to read more about my love and hope for the small church.
